Artiste Key Notes #2

I had so much fun making the purse using one key from Artiste, that I decided to make this a series. Today, I explored the "Birthday Girl" button.

I used the card button to make this slide in card and envelope. The dial on the Cricut was set to 5.5". The interior card is 4.25" by 5.5", but the decorative envelope ended up just under 5" wide and 6.25" tall. You could mail it by inserting the whole thing in a 5" x 7" outer envelope.

The end is near...

Just a few quick reminders as July is winding down:

1) Tomorrow is the last day that you can order items that are not carried forward in the current Idea Book. See attached lists for discontinued items. Everyone who places an order will be in a drawing the discontinued embellishments collection below. To be entered, please place your order using the “Discontinued Items” gathering listed on my Close To My Heart website (bottom right or screen) or emailing me with your order by NOON tomorrow.

2) Tomorrow is also the last day for Perfect Pairs promotion. For every order of $75 or more placed on my website, you’ll receive either Believe Paper Packet (X7145B) and Holiday Pockets (Z1486) OR Wonderland Paper Packet (X7146B) and Wonderland My Stickease® Assortment (X7146C).

3) In addition, the July Stamp of the Month, Live Out Loud, will not be available after tomorrow. You can purchase this stamp set for $17.95 or with an order of $50, pay just $5.

4) I will be submitting all Artiste Cricut Collection pre-orders on Wednesday at NOON. Let me know before that if you would like to take advantage of my no shipping/tax special (savings of $15 or more). You can add the August Stamp Of The Month, Baroque Borders, for just $5 and not pay shipping and taxes on it either!

5) The Free Tote Bag for joining Close To My Heart also starts on Wednesday (10 am CST). These are only available while supplies last. With the new consultant kit priced at only $49, this is a great time to become a consultant. Click here for the online application. Let me know if you have any questions.

Forgotten Photos: Why I Scrapbook!

Today, I want to share with you cool blog I ran across. "Forgotten Old Photos" features neglected pictures that ended up in antique stores, garage sales, etc.

Each post shows a photo and notes about available information -- photographer seal, inscriptions on the back, where it was found, etc.

There are a surprising number of "Full Circle" posts which the previously forgotten photo has been returned to the family because of information received from readers of the blog. Isn't that cool?

Do you have any forgotten photos?

Here's one that is not forgotten. I know this is my grandpa in the late 1800's.  He was the oldest child and had two younger sisters. I remember my great aunt, who was the youngest in the family, telling about how fancy they used to fix my grandpa's hair and clothes, but by the time she came along they put her hair in rags! Those of you who are the baby of the family can relate.

This picture of Grandpa in a long flowing gown and curls really supports my Aunt's story. Isn't that a fun memory? It would be a shame for it to become forgotten. It would take just a few minutes for me to journal about it and maybe a few other memories of my Grandpa and his sisters.

In the box with the cute picture of Grandpa is this one of five children. I'm not sure if culture or technology prevented them from smiling, but even without smiles they are adorable! However, sadly, I do not know who this family is, but maybe someone else in the family does if I take the time to ask. Don't you want to know?

My family is fortunate to have lots of heritage photos. But even though a picture is worth a thousand words, when you are looking for family history, the words (or lack of words) are significant. When my family gets together we often talk about how we need to get all these old pictures scanned and labeled while our parents' generation is here to tell us about them.

So now let's fast forward to today...we certainly don't have a lack of pictures do we?

Cameras have become so small that they are contained in our phones, which we carry with us everywhere. No film and process is needed. We take pictures of everything and share them instantly on social media. But are these pictures preserving our memories?

Ten, fifteen or thirty years from now, will your story be told by these pictures?

Will they be accessible? Many of us no longer print pictures. We are trusting these precious images to memory sticks and social media. Think about it, we really don't know what will happen to all the data we push out to Facebook. Also, with the sheer volume of pictures we take, will anyone want to wade through the thousands of pictures to figure out which ones are significant?

Preserving memories is one of the primary reasons I scrapbook. I want future generations to know what our life was like, where we went, what we did for fun, what events were important to us, etc. I want my daughter and her children to have a sense of heritage. I want to pass on to them the love that we shared in our home.

Scrapbooking can take many forms, but generally it is telling the story of someone(s), a place or time using various media like photos, journaling and memorabilia. Traditional paper scrapbooking is just one of many ways to do this.

The first step is to get the pictures off your devices and out where people can see them.

You don't have to do it all at once, just select a few that stir you and write a few sentences about what you feel.

You can use these words as a start to a scrapbooking layout, a mini-album, a photo journal, or something to adorn your walls. Need some ideas? I'd love to help you find a method that works for you. There are so many fun options available today!

Artiste Key Notes

So when I got my Artiste Collection, I was overwhelmed because there is so much on the cartridge. To narrow down my choices, I challenged myself to create a complete project with just one key. I picked the number 2 key. Here's a snapshot from the handbook.

Images on the "2" key

I made this purse out of the Sonoma paper which is only available for a few more days through July 31.

I used the "fit to page" button for the purse and it ended up about 4.5" tall.

Cut out of purse with scored lines

I honestly am not sure I could have figured out how to put this together without the assembly book. It was not obviously to me that the container part of the purse is completely made with the wings on the sides. Simple fold on the score lines and bring the tabs together to fasten.

After connecting tabs

The final step is to pull up the two flaps and attach by poking the two tabs through to the same side.

Purse before decorating

The flowers, flourish and the scalloped circle tag that I used to decorate the purse are also from the 2 button. The sentiment is from the Kudo's stamp set that comes with the cartridge. The crocheted flowers are from the Bohemian Assortment and the flower centers are mocha opaque gems.

Ready to order this great cartridge collection? I'm offering free shipping and taxes for preorders (through July 31). See my Cricut page for details.

Artiste Collection - Pictures!

Woo Hoo! I got my Artiste Cricut Collection today!!! Can't wait to start creating! But first I thought I'd take a moment to show you the stamps and describe the package contents to you.

First of course there is the cartridge and the normal trimmings: keypad overlay, handbook and Cricut Rewards (90 points, woo hoo!).

There is a second booklet about the same size as the handbook of Assembly Instructions. Next to the 3D images in the handbook, there is a green circle with the page number in the Assembly booklet. In the picture below, the handbook is on the bottom. Can you see the green circles with numbers (25 and 26) next to the picture of the pop up cards and the mailbox? The booklet in the foreground is the Assembly book turned to pages 25 & 26 which shows the assembly of these projects. Isn't that nifty?

The kit comes with the three stamp sets shown below: Kudos, Birthday & Word Balloons.

Using my stash: a few cards

A couple weeks ago when I was impatiently waiting for convention and the new Idea Book, I made a few cards from old papers that I found when I cleaned my craft room.

These bright papers do not fit my current scrapbooking style, but I thought they would make fun girlie birthday cards.

I can't tell you the maker of the paper because I don't know. All of the cardstock and stamping is Close To My Heart.

Going to the Chapel...

Today, I'd like to share with you the cards that we will be making at the next Cards by the Dozen workshop. The theme is Wedding and Anniversary. Enjoy!

This first card is made with just Black and White Daisy cardstock. I used my Martha Stewart scoreboard to add the embossed hash marks to the cake and Bitty Opaque Pearls to dress it up. For the bow, I'll have a rainbow of ribbon colors for you to choose from and Sentiment stamps for the inside.

This next card is made from the discontinued Bliss paper and Trellis stamp set. I used a little Liquid Glass to add some spark to the centers of the flowers. It could be used for both weddings and anniversaries.

Finally, I used the stamp set from the Bliss Workshop On The Go and Perfect Day papers (both discontinued) for this last card. A little ribbon, paper flowers and more Bitty Opaques dress it up.

The workshop will be at my house in Arnold, MO (send me an email for the address) on August 5 from 2:30 - 5:00 pm. For just $12, you will make 12 cards (4 each of the 3 designs).   If you are coming, please RSVP so I can  prepare the materials. I hope to see you there!

Artiste Handbook

Can't wait to see what this cartridge has in store for us? Click here to open the handbook and see all the images.

Have you heard about my Artiste special? If you pre-order the Artiste Cricut collection before 8/1, I'll cover the shipping and tax. That's a savings of around $15!

However, any stamp sets from the Autumn/Winter 2011 Idea Book have not carried over for either of the most recent Idea Books will not be available after July 31, 2012.

Stand Still

I really enjoyed listening to the keynote speaker at the convention was Stacy Jillian. Her message was to slow down and live life.

There were so many take aways, but I narrowed it down to two challenges that I'm going to focus on as I wind up a busy summer and prepare for an equally challenging fall:

1) Occasionally leave the camera at home (intentionally, not because I forgot it). Stepping out from behind the camera allows you to "be there". Recording the memory is not just about having pictures in an album. It is about telling the story.

2) Get rid of the guilt! Don't get depressed about how "behind" you are in your scrapbooks. That is missing the point. Your children may appreciate a simple, loving picture/text more than the "gift" of an entire life book album. (My 12 year old daughter verified this point.)

Follow this link to Stacy's blog (link) to watch the touching video she showed during her message. The song Stand Still by Hilary Weeks is a new favorite for me. Enjoy!

More Convention Announements

Wow, yesterday was a long, exciting day. Before I head back to convention, I wanted to share with you some major announcements that were made.

But first, here is a picture of the coveted 2012 Autumn/Winter Idea Book. You may be able to tell from the picture that mine is already dog-eared and a little tattered from use. Email me to find out how you can get your hands on one!

WARNING: Lots of geeky detail coming up. Fill free to scan and skip, but be sure to make it to the bottom of this post for a few preview pictures. One thing I love about convention is that you get to see all those great projects that are in the Idea Book in person! It is amazing how much texture and dimension is not captured in flat pictures. I know my photography doesn't even come close to the CTMH talent, but I tried to snap a few pictures at angles that show more of the demension in these projects.

I just have to show you this great bag that I got just by coming to the 2012 Close To My Heart convention received. As you can see from this picture of the back, it has two sets of removable straps so that it can be used as a back pack or a shoulder bag. My final picture below shows you the main zippered pocket which has room for several inches of 12"x12" (or larger) items. You can also see that there is a front pocket and two side pockets. Lots of places to stash your stuff!

I would love to have you on my team. Are you ready to join? If it is August 1 today or later simply click on this link and fill in the simple online application.

What to do with all this paper?

This summer, I have been working on organizing my office/craft room. This process has made me realize how much stuff I have accumulated over the years. Since joining Close To My Heart in November 2010, I have used their products almost exclusively. So everything else (mostly papers) has just been sitting unused.

I am proud to say that all of my paper now fits in these three file drawers! And there is actually room to spare!

As I opened storage containers, I challenged myself to sort papers into three groups:
1) Papers LOVE and am so glad I found. These are the papers I can't wait to use!

Make Summer Fun Last Year Round

Plan now how to save the fun

This month's newletter article gives some great tips on how to start preserving your summer memories even if you are too busy having fun. It is so easy to forget if you don't take time to take pictures or take notes about the events the filled your days.

You can bottle your summer tomatoes and preserve berries in jams so that the tasty fruits of summer last all winter long, but sooner or later the slip ’n slide is going to be rolled up and put back in the shed, and the kids will go back to school. What can you do during the height of summer to keep these golden days with you all winter long? What’s the best recipe for preserving a memory?
