Butterfly Shots

Yesterday, I took a basic photography class with I had a great time and learned a ton about my camera. If you are in the St. Louis area and wanting to learn to take better pictures, I would definitely recommend taking this class.

We met at the St. Louis Zoo and spent about the first half of the class in the cafe. Brian stepped us through the settings on our camera starting with fully automatic and working our way up to the semi-manual modes. His pace was perfect! I've tried to learn this on my own by reading books, but a living, breathing human is much easier to understand than black and white print. We found the settings on our own cameras and asked all kinds of questions along the way.

Then we bundled up and headed out to shoot some animals in the snow. After walking about 20 feet in the cold, Brian decided the butterflies would be our best subjects. Great Call! We spent the next hour snapping pictures in the tropical climate of the insect house.

Here's some of my favorite shots...

Can't wait to get out and try my new knowledge on other subjects.

Keep creating,

Snow Cute!

PicMonkey Collage

It snowed this morning, but not enough to accumulate. But it put me in the mood for a snowman. So I made these tasty little guys. Each one is the wrapper for a snack size candy bar. Perfect for stockings, a classroom of kids, scouts, etc.

These are loosely based on these cute little Rolo guys by Debby posted on her blog:

  • Fun/Snack sized Candy Bars (approx. 0.6 oz each)
  • Stretch gloves (I found two pair for $.97 at Walmart -- that's enough for 20 snowmen!)
  • Daisy White Card Stock
  • Black permanent pen
  • Orange Marker

Cut a piece of cardstock 3" x 4". Score a fold line approximately 3/4" from each of the shorter sides. Draw a snowman face and buttons in the center. Color the carrot nose with the orange marker.

Wrap around a candy bar folding on the score lines. It will have a mailbox shape as shown below.

Cut the fingers/thumb off each glove to make hats for the snowmen. Use the body of the glove to make scarves - approximately 1/2" x 3". The picture below shows how to cut five hats and scarves from one glove.

Role the edge of each hat slightly and slide on the top of the snowmen. Tie the scarves around the snowmen between the face and buttons.

Let It Snow!

My Favorites Layout

Today, I want to share with you this “favorites” layout I made at the Regional Celebration. Designed by the creative folks at Close To My Heart, this layout uses the background papers from the Scholastic pack. Because the colors and designs are somewhat muted, your pictures will shine.

This would be a great way to showcase your favorite memories from 2012. There is room for at least five pictures. The 3"x3" openings on the right side would be great for Instagram style prints from your phone snapshots.

Making pages that depend heavily on stamping are easy on your pocket book too! I love creating my own embellishments from a little cardstock and ink!

Do you recognize the stamp set I used? If you said Perfect Fit - Frames, you are correct.

This set is typically used to frame 1x1 circles that can be stamped with images or words. In this layout, the round "frame" was used as a background stamp on the right page. The oval frame was used as an embellishment on both pages. After wrapping it with Baker's Twine, I attached it using foam tape to add dimension.

Here's a close up of the cluster on the left page.

My Ray of Sunshine

Who is your Ray of Sunshine? Here's a fun layout you can create! You can add lots of pictures to this open design. This layout would be great to display a series of quick "funny face" snap shots from your phone.
Clementine Ray of Sunshine Layout
You may recognize the left page from page 24 of the Idea Book. I simplified it somewhat and repeated some of the elements to make this a two page layout.
Here's a close up of the cluster on the right. The beautiful layered flowers are pre-assembled, including the buttons with thread, and adhesive backed in the Cottage Assortment. Instant detail!

Layering stamped images with foam tape is an economical way to add dimension to your projects.

Reversible Cards

I apologize that it has been a while since I have posted any art work. Today, I’m going to make up for it and post a series of simple cards.

Each of these cards is reversible! By this I mean that although each pair of cards were cut from the same papers, I turned one more of the B&T papers over before assembling one of them. It is so fun to see what a difference this can make.

These cards are so simple and easy to make because all of the sentiments on the Casual Expressions Stamp set can be cut out using the Art Philosophy Cricut cartridge.

Recipe for cards:
Paper: Card 1 - Clementine, Card 2 - Avonlea and Dakota, Card 3 - Scholastic, Card 4 - Flirty
Stamp: Casual Expressions
Embellishments: Mocha Opaques, Burlap Ribbon

I hope these cards have inspired you to think simple. Just a few rectangles of paper can be used to make designer cards with some creative stamping and a few embellishments!

Have a crafty day,
