Get Distressed! Tools to add some distressed detail to your paper products

Want to take your paper projects up a notch? Distressing is the best way to make your project come together and look professionally made. Almost every project I do uses one of the forms of distressing shown in this video. It doesn't look complete until something has been torn, inked, sanded or scratched. Some how roughing things up a bit makes all the pieces come together into a cohesive look.

What is your favorite method of distressing? Share your thought in the comments below.

Happy Creating,

Skylark Card Kit Details

On Friday, I posted about the new Skylark card kit. Today, I wanted to show you a few details about the cards in the kit.

Edge treatments always make a project come together. For these cards, a little sanding on the solid cardstock brings out the white core. In addition, sponging with Chocolate ink softens the white and B&T paper edges.

A little foam tape on card 3 & 4 under trimmed bird and blooms adds dimension.

This butterfly on this card was stamped twice. Once on the underlying White cardstock piece and once on a scrap of lagoon paper. The lagoon butterfly was trimmed and the wings folded up. It is attached to the card with a little Liquid Glass at the body only so that the wings are above the paper. The stamping on the white cardstock creates a shadowed look.

Here are close up pictures of each of the cards:

Skylark Hello Blooms Layout

When my sister sent me these precious pictures of her family and I thought the soft Skylark papers were the perfect way to say "Hello" to my new nephew, Moses. I finally had a chance to get the put the layout together and I'm quite happy with how it turned out. The layout pattern is "Classic Look" from Imagine by Jeanette Lynton.

This layout uses the same stamp set (Hello Blooms) as the card I posted a couple days ago. I love stamps that are versatile to work with both cards and layouts. You may notice that the flower and leaf cluster in the bottom right is a replica of the flower on the card.

For the layout, I cut out a couple more flowers and leaves, but picked a different flower shape to add variety. Also, I made centers for these flowers by stamping 1/2" circles and attached them with foam tape.

I love the zipstrips and use them for ribbons, borders, banners or arrows. They are the most economical embellishment since they come with the paper and, of course, they always coordinate perfectly.

Here are close ups of the two pages in the layout.

A Happy Bloom Skylark Card

Today, I have another Skylark project to share. I love this paper and am so sad that it will retire at the end of the month!

This card is based on the pattern Sweet & Simple from Originals Card Confidence Program by Jeanette Lynton. The Close To My Heart How To books are my go to when I need some inspiration. They are a must on any paper-crafter's bookshelf.

The leaf and flower were cut on the Cricut using the Artiste cartridge (p. 32 of the handbook). All of the stamping is from the Hello Bloom Acrylix stamp set.

To make the card nice and dimensional, I popped the flower & leaves up with 3D Foam Tape. The flower center is from the Skylark Assortment. So pretty!

Product Focus: Paper Fundamentals Basic Assortment -- plus a chance to win a pack!

One of the most overlooked products in the current Idea Book is the Paper Fundamentals Basic Assortment. It's time to take this baby out of the corner. The pictures in the book just don't do it justice. Until you see there papers in person, you can easily miss how unique and versatile they are. I'd like to invite you to take a closer look at this product.

In each pack, you get 20 sheets of double-sided paper, 2 each of 10 designs. Both sides of the each paper have the same pattern. On one side the palette color is offset by white and on the other with a glossy resist. The colors match our basic color palette allowing you to add a little extra glimmer or a classic subtle design to any project by replacing your solid cardstock with the Paper Fundamentals Basic Assortment

Watch this video to learn more and to see some fun examples of how these papers can add spice to any of your projects.

For a chance to win your own Paper Fundamentals Basic Assortment, follow this LINK to Jeanette Lynton's blog and leave a comment telling her what your fundamental scrapbooking item is and why you can't live without it. To be eligible to win, be sure to leave your comment before July 31, 2014.

Happy creating and good luck!

Confession Time: I just finished my first album!

I feel like shouting from the rooftop, "My 2010 Family Album is DONE!" I'm thrilled to finally have one finished!!

Technically, this is not my first completed album. I have finished a couple of my daughter (baby & preschool years) and a few trip books. But this 2010 album is my first {completed} annual family album.

I have completed pages that will eventually go in over 10 year's of incomplete albums. A couple more are like this one was a few hours ago: assembled with over 90% of the work completed but waiting for me to finish a page or two, add journaling (my least favorite part) or other minor tweaks.  This morning I decided "Today is the Day" and finished everything that was outstanding for 2010.

Not perfect, but done!

Most of what I did today was journaling. When it comes to journaling, I am a horrible procrastinator. You know how some people have math test anxiety? Not me, I love math, but the sight of a blank essay book scares me to death! So I tend to put it off journaling because it is so hard to get it perfectly. Today, I decided I'd rather have it done than perfect and incomplete. So I just grabbed my journaling pen and started writing in all those blank boxes the first thing that came to mind.

In order to wrap this album up, I utilized Studio J digital scrapbooking on several pages. These beautiful pages mix perfectly with my traditional paper pages. This title page is from the Year In Review Express Collection, so all I just dropped my pictures in and updated the title and journaling.

I also mixed full layouts with pocket pages. For example, I had several random pictures of things that happened over the summer that didn't really fit on layouts, but helped tell the story of what we were doing that year. I used the Horizontal Divided Page Protectors (Design 2) to include these pictures in my album. I created the journaling card in the top left pocket in Studio J.

I also used Flip Flaps throughout when I had more pictures than space on my pages. This allowed more room for the titles, journaling, embellishments and just space for everything to breathe :)

A stack of 4 " x 6" pictures with Flip Flaps

3" x 3" Flip Flaps to add a mini-book to my Christmas page
I finished the album off by putting the year in a Label Holder and clipping it to the spine. Now this album truly is shelf-ready.

So, I've shared my secret of incomplete albums. Now it is your turn! Do you have unfinished projects waiting for just a few minutes to wrap up? Tell me about it in the comments.

Keep Creating,
Rebecca

Surprise Card with Circus Alphabet

Just a quick post tonight to share this card I made with the fun Lollydoodle paper and Circus Alphabet, the July Stamp of the Month.

This card is based on the "Right Design" pattern on p. 42 of the Wishes How To Book. To create the letters, I used Slate pigment ink then colored them with our Watercolor pencils. To brighten them up, I went over them with the blending pen. The result is that they look painted with watercolors!

I finished the card with coordinating Lollydoodle Stickease and gems from the Assortment pack. The Lollydoodle collection (allong with all the other current collections) will retire at the end of July, so order yours today.

The Circut Alphabet stamp set is also only available during July. You can get yours for just $5 with an order of $50.

Happy Close To My Heart Flash Mob!

Last week, I did something completely out of character for me. I participated in a Flash Mob during the closing ceremony of the 2014 Close To My Heart convention!

The dance was designed and organized by fellow consultant Tresa Black and word spread through a grassroots effort in the months leading up to convention. She had an insider at corporate who helped make it happen, but the executive team on stage and founder, Janette Lynton, backstage had no idea what was coming.

In the video below, I am directly to the left of the camera guy. You can see me bopping along a couple times in my pink jacket when he pans left just before shifting back toward the front.

In addition to adding a fun ending to the convention, participants raised over $800 for Operation Smile. I'm so proud to have been a part of it!

For the First Time, I'm Jealous of iPhone users: Studio J Snapshot App

I love my Android phone and am on my third model. I've never had an iPhone. Each time I upgrade my phone, I compare models and the iPhone always falls short. My husband would say it is because I don't like change. And there is probably some truth to that, but I have always been 100% happy with my choice of sticking with an Android.

Until today...

...because I just found out that there is an iPhone Studio J app! 4 Reals! I can't believe I had not heard of it.

It's called Studio J Snapshot and you can download it for FREE in the Apple store. It works on the iPhone, iPod and iPad.

While you can't create new layouts in this app, you can show off the ones you have already made and purchased. You can also review the color palette and the kit options to plan your next project.

How cool is that?

To use the app, you must first create a Studio J account.

So, if you have an iPhone, what are you waiting for. Create your free account, download the free app and start playing with Studio J. Let me know if you need help; I'd love to help you get started!
